Your Foundation for Healthy Eating
by Marty Copeland | Featured, Nutrition/Weight Loss, Top Resources | No Comments »God has already given us the foundation of what kinds of food we should eat to be healthy and maintain our bodies. He created our bodies, He created food, and He created us to live an abundant, long and satisfying life.
In Genesis 1:29, God tells us plainly what is good to eat. “And God said, See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the land and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food.” (AMP) After the flood, in Genesis 9:3, He tells us, “Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.” (NIV) By studying the Bible you can see that God intended for us to nourish, sustain and prosper our bodies with vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, fish, chicken and beef. The closer we stick to God’s plan of whole foods, the healthier we will be.
As you choose whole foods more often, go organic whenever possible. Organic foods are better for us because they don’t contain the chemicals that can cause toxic buildup in our bodies. The fewer chemicals we consume the more efficiently our bodies function, which in turn makes it easier for us to burn fat.
Common sense can tell us organic foods are healthier. Who wants to eat foods produced with all of the “extra” stuff? Our bodies just simply weren’t created for low quality fuel. Without the nutrients that come from healthy food, our bodies can find themselves in a state of “dis-ease.” Not only that, but our bodies’ ability to absorb and utilize healthy, whole foods will help satisfy our hunger more successfully. If we’re not getting enough nutrients from our food, we are more likely to overeat because our nutritional requirements are not being met.
Research indicates that fruits and veggies grown organically have significantly higher levels of antioxidants than conventionally grown foods. Antioxidants help fight many diseases including cancer, heart disease and others. They help protect the body against the adverse affects of toxins and aging.
I know eating strictly organic food is not always possible; neither is it a prerequisite for weight loss. However, it certainly helps to eat organic food when possible because our bodies utilize and metabolize whole foods best. Public awareness about the benefits of organic products has made them more accessible and affordable. I know from experience, your family will be just as satisfied with organic choices as the “regular” ones. An organic, whole grain, peanut butter and jelly sandwich with a glass of organic milk hits the spot for my youngest daughter every time!
God created our bodies to work optimally when we eat the right amount of healthy whole food at the right times. Unlike a vehicle, our bodies are irreplaceable. You and I have a responsibility to take care of the body God has given us. After all, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 tells us, “Do you not know that your body is the temple (the very sanctuary) of the Holy Spirit Who lives within you, Whom you have received [as a Gift] from God? You are not your own, You were bought with a price [purchased with a preciousness and paid for, made His own]. So then, honor God and bring glory to Him in your body” (AMP). In order to do that, remember to choose the kinds of food God has already said in His Word are good to eat, and you will have a solid foundation for a healthy diet.
