Can fiber help me lose weight?

Well, the answer is a resounding YES!! Fiber does something wonderful. It slows the digestive process thereby making you feel full longer. Fiber contains bulk rather than calories. This means that when you eat high fiber foods you tend to eat less of them in one sitting and that translates into fewer calories consumed than with low fiber foods.

Almost all dietary fiber comes from plants, particularly legumes, whole fruits, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, and bran. Fiber is filling because it absorbs water as it moves through the digestive tract. It also has been shown to lower blood cholesterol levels and to stabilize blood sugar levels after meals. A quick word of caution when you start consuming more fiber, start slowly and drink plenty of water. If you suddenly start consuming large amounts of fiber you could experience gastric distress.
